R.A Penfold est un des plus prolifiques auteurs de grande bretagne. Il a écrit de nombreux livres, principalement concernant l'électronique. La majorité des titres consacrés à l'électronique publiés par Bernard Babani on été écris par Penfold. Lorsque les premiers ordinateurs sont arrivés, la collection Babani s'est enrichi d'un série dédié à l'apprentissage de ces nouvelles machines. Ce livre, consacré à l'Oric 1 est resté disponible pendant très longtemps, et pourrait d'ailleur être encore trouvé dans certaines bouquineries. C'est un petit manuel d'utilisation, qui n'est ni très didactique, ni très bon.

R.A Penfold is one of the most prolific authors in Britain. He wrote numerous books, mainly on electronics. A whole series of electronics books were published by Bernard Babani, most were by Penfold. When computers arrived the Babani range extended to include instruction on how to use the new machine. This one for the Oric-1 was available for a long time - and may still be available at some books shops. It is a small brief 'manual rewrite' that is not very comprehensive, not very good.

C'est vraiment un grand livre. Il parle de comment brancher l'ordinateur (agréable, avec des photos très claires), et explique brievement le fonctionnement d'un ordinateur. Les chapitres suivants traitent de la programation en Basic, des fonctions graphiques et sonores. Pour finir, une introduction à la programmation assembleur, et de nombreuses annexes avec des table de codes ASCII, code escapes, messages d'erreur, commandes de l'imprimante, shémas des connecteurs d'extension, etc... Ce livre deviendra par la suite le manuel de référence de l'Oric Atmos

It's really a great book. In this book you can find how plug and use your Oric Computer (nice !), and you get a brief description of how a computer works. Next chapters learn you the way of programming in Basic language, to do graphics and sounds. At the end, you can find an introduction to machine code, and many appendices covering ASCII tables, escape codes, error messages, memory map, MCP 40 printer commands, I/O connectors, and many other interesting stuffs. It will become the official reference manual sold with Atmos computer (see below)
